⭐ Cryptanthus (Earth Star) Care Guide – For Alans Garden
Cryptanthus are low-growing bromeliads known for their star-shaped rosettes and stunning leaf colors. They are easy, humidity-loving indoor plants.
🌤 Light
- Prefers bright, indirect light.
- Morning sun is okay, but avoid strong afternoon sun.
- Low light = faded colors
- Bright filtered light = vibrant pinks, reds & stripes
💧 Watering
- Keep soil slightly moist, never soggy.
- Water when the top layer feels dry.
- Reduce watering during monsoon and very humid days.
- Use RO or soft water if possible to avoid salt buildup.
☁️ Humidity
- Loves 50–70% humidity.
- Mist lightly in the morning (avoid soaking the center).
- Keep near other plants to increase natural humidity.
🌡 Temperature
- Ideal: 20–32°C
- Protect from cold (below 15°C causes leaf damage).
- Avoid keeping near AC vents.
🌱 Soil Mix
Cryptanthus need a fast-draining, airy mix:
- 40% coco peat
- 40% perlite
- 20% orchid bark or sphagnum
OR
A ready bromeliad mix works well.
Avoid heavy garden soil.
🪴 Potting
- Best in shallow, wide pots.
- Ensure good drainage.
- Repot every 2–3 years or when pup growth becomes crowded.
🍃 Feeding
- Use a very diluted liquid fertilizer (¼ strength) once every 45 days.
- Do not pour fertilizer into the center of the plant—feed only the soil.
✂️ Propagation
- Cryptanthus produce pups at the base.
- Remove pups when they reach 1/3 the size of the mother plant.
- Pot separately in the same soil mix.
