🌸 Vanda Orchid Care — Alan’s Garden Guide

Vanda orchids are stunning, sun-loving orchids known for their vibrant colors and long-lasting blooms. They need bright light, high humidity, and excellent airflow.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Give very bright, filtered sunlight.
  • Morning sun + bright indirect light for the rest of the day is ideal.
  • Avoid harsh midday sun in Kerala/Tamil Nadu climates, as it can scorch leaves.

Signs:

  • Yellowish leaves = too much sun
  • Dark green leaves = too little sun

🌡️ Temperature

  • Day: 24–32°C
  • Night: 18–22°C
  • They love warm, humid weather — perfect for Alan’s Garden climate.

💧 Watering

Vandas have bare roots, so watering is crucial.

If hanging bare-root:

  • Water daily in summer.
  • Water every 2–3 days in rainy/cool weather.
  • Soak roots until they turn green, then allow to dry fully.

If potted in baskets:

  • Water 3–4 times a week depending on heat and airflow.

Tip: Never let roots stay soggy — they need wet → dry cycles.

💦 Humidity

  • Needs 60–80% humidity.
  • Mist roots daily if humidity is low.
  • Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues.

🌱 Fertilizer

Feed Vanda orchids regularly; they are heavy feeders.

  • Use balanced NPK 20-20-20 once a week.
  • Use Bloom booster (e.g., 10-30-20) twice a month during flowering season.
  • Flush roots with plain water once a month to remove salt buildup.

🪴 Potting / Mounting

  • Best grown hanging bare-root in a basket or wooden slat.
  • If using media, choose:
    ✔️ Large charcoal
    ✔️ Large bark
✔️ Coconut husk chunks (well washed)

Repot every 2–3 years only if roots overflow excessively.

🐛 Common Problems & Fixes

Root rot

  • Cause: overwatering / poor airflow
  • Fix: cut black mushy roots + spray fungicide

Leaf sunburn

  • Brown patches on leaves
  • Move to filtered light

Aphids / Mealybugs

  • Spray neem oil weekly until gone

🌼 Flowering Tips

  • Give bright light → key for blooming
  • Keep night temperature slightly cooler
  • Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer
  • Ensure proper drying between watering

With the right care, Vandas can bloom 2–3 times a year.
