Caladium – Description and Care Guide | AlansGarden
🌿 Description
Caladium is a stunning tropical foliage plant known for its vibrant, heart-shaped leaves in shades of red, pink, green, and white. Native to South America, Caladium plants bring a splash of colour to indoor and shaded outdoor spaces. Their delicate, papery leaves feature striking patterns, making them an excellent choice for ornamental gardens, pots, and indoor décor.
Caladiums grow from tubers and thrive during the warm months, producing lush foliage. They go dormant in winter but return with fresh, colourful growth each year when cared for properly.
🌱 Caladium Care
1. Light
- Prefers bright, indirect light.
- Avoid direct sunlight as it can burn the delicate leaves.
- Can tolerate partial shade, making it ideal for indoor rooms or shaded balconies.
2. Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
- Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry.
- Reduce watering during the plant’s dormant period (usually winter).
3. Soil
- Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter.
- A mix of garden soil, cocopeat, and compost works well.
4. Temperature & Humidity
- Thrives in temperatures 18–30°C.
- Loves high humidity. Mist the leaves or use a humidity tray for indoor plants.
5. Fertilizer
- Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season (March to September).
- Avoid fertilizing during dormancy.
6. Dormancy Care
- Leaves may yellow and die back naturally in winter.
- Reduce watering, keep the tubers dry, and resume normal care in spring when new growth appears.
7. Potting & Repotting
- Repot in early spring before new growth starts.
- Choose a pot with good drainage.
8. Common Problems
- Leaf burn: Too much direct sunlight.
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
- Drooping leaves: Low humidity or underwatering.
