💜 Oxalis  (Purple Shamrock) Care Guide – For Alans Garden

Oxalis triangularis is a beautiful plant known for its deep purple, butterfly-like leaves and delicate pink or white flowers. It is easy to grow and does best in bright indoor or shaded outdoor spaces.

🌤 Light

  • Prefers bright indirect light.
  • Morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh afternoon sun.
  • Too little light = leaves turn dull and open less
  • Too much sun = leaf burn and fading color

Indoors near a window is ideal.

💧 Watering

  • Keep soil slightly moist, not soggy.
  • Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry.
  • Reduce watering during winter or dormancy.
  • Ensure the pot drains well to prevent root rot.

🌡 Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–28°C
  • Avoid temperatures below 12°C.
  • Protect from strong winds and AC airflow.

☘️ Dormancy (Very Important!)

Oxalis naturally goes dormant for 4–8 weeks:

  • Leaves slowly close and dry.
  • Don’t worry—this is normal.

During dormancy:

  • Stop watering completely.
  • Keep the pot in a dry, shaded place.
  • After 4–6 weeks, start watering lightly.
  • Fresh leaves will sprout again.

🌱 Soil Mix

Use a fast-draining mix:

  • 50% coco peat
  • 30% perlite
  • 20% compost or leaf mold

Avoid heavy soil that stays wet.

🪴 Potting

  • Use a pot with good drainage.
  • Repot every 1–2 years.
  • Bulbs multiply quickly—separate and propagate easily.

🍃 Feeding

  • Use a mild liquid fertilizer once a month (½ strength).
  • Do not overfeed; they are light feeders.

✂️ Maintenance

  • Remove dried leaves regularly.
  • If plant becomes leggy, trim and allow new compact growth.
  • Rotate pot for even leaf opening.

⚠️ Common Problems

❌ Leaves folding in daytime

  • Normal! Leaves open in light and close at night.

❌ Yellowing leaves

  • Overwatering
  • Old leaves dying naturally

❌ No new growth

  • Plant is in dormancy
  • Soil too wet or too dry
