🍃 Rhaphidophora cryptantha Care Guide – For Alans Garden
(Also called Shingle Plant)
Rhaphidophora cryptantha is a beautiful shingling aroid that grows flat against a wooden board or pole. It stays compact and shows striking silver-green patterned leaves.
🌤 Light
- Prefers bright indirect light.
- Soft morning sun is fine.
- Avoid harsh afternoon sun → causes leaf burn.
- Low light = slow growth and dull pattern.
💧 Watering
- Water when top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry.
- Keep evenly moist, not soggy.
- Needs less water during rainy or cold weather.
- Limp leaves = underwatering
- Yellowing leaves = overwatering or poor drainage
☁️ Humidity
- Loves 60–80% humidity.
- Mist lightly in the morning.
- Use a humidity tray or keep near other plants.
- Avoid misting late evening to prevent fungal spots.
🌡 Temperature
- Ideal: 20–32°C
- Avoid temperatures below 15°C.
- Keep away from AC vents and strong airflow.
🌱 Soil Mix (Best for Shingling Aroids)
Use a fast-draining, chunky aroid mix:
- 40% coco peat
- 30% perlite
- 20% orchid bark
- 10% compost or worm castings
Good drainage is essential to avoid root rot.
🧱 Support Board (Very Important!)
Cryptantha needs a surface to “shingle” on:
- Use a wooden board, cork bark, or moss board.
- Tie or clip the vine gently until it attaches itself.
- More contact = larger, flatter, beautiful leaves.
🪴 Potting
- Use a medium pot with drainage holes.
- Repot every 1–1.5 years.
- Do not overpot—slightly tight pots encourage faster climbing.
🍃 Feeding
- Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 30–40 days.
- Micronutrients help maintain silver leaf pattern.
- Avoid high nitrogen → reduces markings.
✂️ Pruning & Propagation
- Trim long runners that don’t attach to the board.
- Propagate using:
✔ Single node cuttings
✔ Stem cuttings rooted in sphagnum or water
⚠️ Common Problems
❌ Leaves not sticking to board
- Light is too low
- No humidity
- The board is too smooth
❌ Leaf yellowing
- Overwatering
- Soil too dense
❌ Tiny leaves
- Needs support board
- Needs brighter light
