🌸 Rhynchostylis Orchid Care — AlansGarden Guide

(Includes Rhynchostylis gigantea, Retusa, Coelestis and hybrids)

Rhynchostylis orchids are fragrant, hardy Vanda-type orchids known for their dense flower clusters. They love bright light, high humidity, and excellent airflow.

☀️ Light

  • Bright, filtered sunlight is essential.
  • Ideal: 50–70% shade net if grown outdoors in Kerala climate.
  • Protect from harsh midday sun to avoid leaf burn.

💧 Watering

  • Water daily in hot weather (March–May).
  • Water every 2–3 days in cooler/rainy seasons.
  • Ensure the roots dry slightly between watering—do not keep constantly wet.

Tip:

Mist the aerial roots lightly in the mornings for healthy root growth.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 20–32°C
  • Humidity: 60–80%
  • Needs strong airflow to prevent rot.

🌱 Potting / Mounting

Rhynchostylis prefer being airy:

Best options:

  • Net pots
  • Clay orchid pots
  • Wooden baskets
  • Mounted on coconut husk/chips

Potting mix (if used):

  • Large coconut chips
  • Charcoal pieces
  • A bit of bark
    (Loose, airy, fast-drying)

Avoid compact mixes.

✂️ Fertilizer

Feed lightly but regularly:

  • NPK 19-19-19 or 20-20-20 every 7–10 days (dilute to 1/4 strength)
  • During spike formation: switch to Bloom Booster 10-30-20 every 10–15 days
  • Foliar sprays early morning only

🌼 Blooming Tips

  • Needs bright light to bloom.
  • Cooler nights help initiate flower spikes.
  • Do not move or disturb the plant after a spike appears.
  • Rhynchostylis gigantea blooms once a year, usually winter–early spring.

⚠️ Common Problems

Leaf sunburn

Caused by direct afternoon sun.

Root rot

From poor ventilation or overwatering.

No blooming

Insufficient light or too much nitrogen.

Pests

Scale, mealybugs—clean with neem oil weekly.
